CCMS BOOKS
Robert C. Hickle, M.A., between 1976 and 1980, drew on 40 years of experience developing employee assistance programs in the railroad and manufacturing industries. Counseling hundreds of alcoholics and addicts, Bob created his way of seeing the alcoholic/addict, their families, the addiction profession, and society’s view of alcohol. His unique view starts from having parents who were both alcoholics and then raised by his grandmother, who was a teetotaler and a member of the Women’s Temperance League. If you asked him, he would tell you he never had even a sip of alcohol, believing that if he did, he’d go down the same road as his parents. This was quite an accomplishment, given that Bob served in both Army and Navy during WW II. Additionally, he served on several boards and committees during the initial development of alcoholism treatment programs in Iowa. He was also a Boy Scout Leader, an active member of the Methodist Church, and an avid outdoorsman.
I was fortunate to be his friend for several years as he prepared for retirement. I, not being one to mince words, asked him what would happen to his booklets after he died. “I guess they’ll die with me,” was his response. At that point, I offered to keep his works alive by keeping them in print, only as a book, then as Kindle, and as audiobooks. Making allowances for the time in which he wrote and recognizing that most of his work was with alcoholics, you’ll find they have endured the test of time and that what he wrote can easily be applied to any addictive behavior. You will enjoy his writing, seeing as he said, “I write the way I talk,” transparent, to-the-point, and jargon-free.
Bob's five booklets are available in paperback, Kindle, and audiobook formats. Click to access them.
Responsible Drinking and Other Myths contains his words of wisdom in short chapters with pithy titles like “Dealing with the Tensions of Sobriety,” “Sober and In Trouble,” and “Psychic Pain.” He relates his observations, experiences, and perspectives as he mainly worked with alcoholics.
Through A Glass Darkly again, he recounts in his down-to-earth, jargon-free manner what he learned from alcoholics about alcoholism. With chapter titles like "A Word To The Professionals," "When You're Ready, You're Ready," and "Quality Sobriety," he continues to explain what he has learned to help us all understand the alcoholic/addict and their family and loved ones.
Mosaic of Sobriety. Always the one with titles that make you scratch your head, Bob offers such pieces to consider as "A 50-50 Chance," "The Professionals See Them First," "Doing The Right Thing For The Wrong Reason," "Shut Up And Listen," and finally, "I Never Got Anybody Drunk."
Pearl of Great Price. Fourth in the series of five books, Robert continues his dual quest for a better understanding of alcohol and alcoholism. He transmits to us (the listeners) what he has realized and what still needs to be discovered. Again, with his standout chapter titles, you'll hear: "Spiritual Insight or Despair?", "Comes the Dawn," and "Dry For 15 Years, Happy For Three Months."
Let’s Keep It Simple. Bob wraps up his booklet series with chapter titles such as "We've Got To Go At It Backwards," "Incomplete Grieving," "The Right Word and The Right Time," " Is the Alcoholic an Addict?" and finally, "He Had To Quit Because He Couldn't Stop."

HOW ETHICAL AND UNETHICAL DECISIONS ARE MADE by Thomas H. Schear
Ethical dilemmas face every organization and individual at one time or another. The challenge is how to resolve them. There are codes of ethics/conduct, laws, rules, and regulations in place, yet unethical decisions are being made. So, there must be deeper and more impactful factors as to why ethical decisions are made and, on the other hand, why some organizations consistently arrive at unethical/illegal outcomes when faced with moral challenges.
This book itemizes and explores those factors in both the individual and the organization so the reader can better understand what is happening with themselves and within the organization.
After reading and applying the elements of this book:
-
You will have mastered the Interactive Ethical Model: You can spot factors in yourself, coworkers, and your organization's management. The step-by-step analytical data, tips, and techniques will help you and your staff stop suffering when facing dilemmas.
-
You will know how ethical and unethical decisions are made: There is always the best choice when facing a moral dilemma. To arrive at that, it is essential to understand what individual and organizational factors seriously impact the unfolding of an event and are working in the background.
-
Your working environment will become more transparent about how ethical and other dilemmas occur. Then, after they occur, how is it dealt with ethically or non-ethically?
-
You will learn to look for red flags that suggest the process is heading in a direction that will more likely lead to an unethical outcome and perhaps redirect the decision-making process to an ethical outcome.
